According to a recently released report from the Washington State Republicans, Republican state Rep. Matt Shea is accused of participating “in an act of domestic terrorism against the United States.”
The report states that Shea, who has been the representative of the state’s 4th legislative district since 2009, is now being investigated to determine if he “engaged in, planned, or promoted political violence.” Rampart Group investigators say the investigation was opened because of “public allegations made against [Shea] in news media and online reporting.” The investigators say that Shea refused to be interviewed for the report.
The report claims that “[i]nvestigators have obtained evidence that Representative Shea, as a leader of the Patriot Movement, planned, engaged in, and promoted a total of three armed conflicts of political violence against the United States Government in three states outside the State of Washington over a three-year period to include 2014, 2015 and 2016.”
The investigation also alluded to a controversial document Shea admitted he wrote called “Biblical Basis for War,” which was released in 2018. It features bullet points like “Rules of War,” which calls for an end to abortions, same sex marriage, and communism. It says, “If they do not yield — kill all males.” Whoa.
Shea responded to criticism about the document through a video posted to Facebook about a year ago. He claims the document was taken out of context.
Shea was back on FB just recently, saying,
“Like we are seeing with our President this is a sham investigation meant to silence those of us who stand up against attempts to disarm and destroy our great country. I will not back down, I will not give in, I will not resign.”Matthew Shea
State House Republican Leader J.T. Wilcox said in a statement that Shea has been suspended from the House Republican Caucus and will be relieved of his committee posts. His committees have included Civil Rights, Judiciary, and more. Wilcox said, “Allegations this serious, many supported by his own communications and associates, justify this immediate action.”
Wilcox says the full report has been sent to the US Attorney’s Office and the FBI but it is unknown if he is facing any charges.
- The report says that in 2014 Shea allegedly backed a 41-day armed occupation of a federal government facility that left in its wake “devastating financial, physical and emotional harm to a community and its residents; and the loss of one life.”
- The report brought up Shea’s postings on the Liberty For All III% website, which asked Patriot Movement members all over the country to travel to Bunkerville, Nevada to stand against the government. Around 1,500 armed members showed up.
- In 2015, the report said, Shea called Patriot Movement members once again, this time to travel to Priest River, Idaho, where he is said to have been involved in an armed conflict with the Veteran’s Administration.
- The report also said Shea’s participation in the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016 was a domestic act of terrorism.
Shea remains a state legislator for now
Since the Washington State Legislature is not currently in session and a member cannot be expelled unless the legislature is in session, and even then it requires a two thirds vote, Shea will remain in office as an elected state representative. Bernard Dean, chief clerk of the Washington House of Representatives, said, “A number of responses are possible, including expulsion or censure. Members will continue to discuss these and other options over the coming weeks.”
