John Dowd, the lead lawyer representing Trump regarding the response to the Russia investigation, has resigned.
“Mr. Dowd told CNN in a statement, “I love the President… and wish him well.”
Well… that’s a frankly bizarre farewell from a lawyer, isn’t it?
Per the New York Times, John Dowd has considered resigning several times since having taken over Trump’s legal team last summer. Dowd has strongly urged the president to formally cooperate with Mueller and to resist attacking the special counsel investigation publicly.
It is widely reported that it is because of Trump’s unwillingness to heed his lawyer’s advice on his response to the special counsel investigation that Dowd finally had enough and decided to resign. His departure has drawn scrutiny among Washington insiders who wonder what will become of Trump’s legal strategy. Dowd had strongly discouraged the president from sitting for an interview with special counsel investigators.
The New York Times also reports:
“The president was said to be pleased with Mr. Dowd’s resignation, as he had grown frustrated with him, particularly over the weekend when Mr. Dowd called on the Justice Department to end the special counsel investigation. Mr. Dowd, who had forged relationships with the special counsel’s office, said at first that he was speaking for the president, but later backtracked”
In recent days, President Trump has really stepped up his attacks on Robert Mueller. To spectators, this appears to be an egocentric response to the realization that the investigation is indeed focusing directly on Trump and his family.
Trump’s history indicates that he will replace John Dowd with someone even more sycophantic as this president seems — to the detriment of himself and everyone is wake — hellbent on antagonizing Mueller and aggressively bashing the Trump-Russia investigation at every possible opportunity.
