Previously, former President George W. Bush spoke frankly about politics on the Today Show. His willingness to speak out against fellow Republican President Donald Trump just goes to show that Trump’s presidency is considered a failure and nightmare by many.
Typically, the former president has not commented on presidential politics since leaving the White House in January of 2009, but decided to offer some sharp observations during his appearance. While speaking about Trump’s statement that the media is the “enemy of the people”, Bush said:
“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy…We need an independent media to hold people like me to account….Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse power, whether it be here or elsewhere…”
Bush continued by adding that it is the president’s job to urge other world leaders to encourage free press, saying, “It’s kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves,”.
The former president also stated that “we all need answers” while discussing the Russia scandal.
Robert Reich, former Clinton Secretary of Labor and current Trump resistance leader, had the following to say about Bush’s observations:
Who would have ever that Americans would elect a president like Trump, who could make GWB appear to be a genius?
