It doesn’t happen very often, but when Republican leaders finally realize the hypocrisy of their own party and give voice to their anger, it makes the world a little brighter. Michael Steele just brightened the whole world for days with statements he made on MSNBC’s Hardball.
During the segment, a clip is played of Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Christian nonprofit Family Research Council, speaking with Isaac Dovere of Politico. When asked about Trump’s alleged affair with a former porn star, Perkins said, “We kind of gave [Trump] a… mulligan, you get a do-over…”
Hardball’s host, Chris Matthews, asked what Steele, former chair of the Republican National Committee, thinks about evangelicals giving Trump a pass on his alleged sexual encounter. Steele responded with what should be the thoughts of any sane, rational person. He says to the evangelicals,
“Just shut the hell up and don’t ever preach to me about anything ever again. I don’t want to hear it… After telling me how to live my life, who to love, what to believe, what not to believe, what to do and what not to do and now you sit back and the prostitutes don’t matter? The grabbing the you-know-what doesn’t matter? The outright behavior and lies don’t matter? Just shut up.”
Host Matthews also hits on another obvious hypocrisy, sarcastically saying, “But in all fairness [the evangelicals] gave a lot of moral credit to Barack Obama for being a good husband and a good father and never messing around…” Which, of course, never happened. Why in the world would WASP-y evangelicals ever spare a moment to praise a good man when they have so much hellfire and damnation to spread?
