Following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14th, with Americans clamoring for action from a Republican Party that’s effectively owned by the NRA — businesses began stepping up where the GOP wouldn’t.
Among those: Allied Van Lines, North American Van Lines, Avis Budget Group, Hertz Group, Alamo, Enterprise, National (which is owned by Enterprise), MetLife, TrueCar, SimpliSafe, and Symantec — all announced they were ending various discounts extended to NRA Members.
Delta Airlines announced they were also ending a discount program for NRA members, which prompted Georgia Republicans to kill a tax break for jet fuel worth about $50 million. Republican Governor Nathan Deal, also a signed the bill into law.
@GovernorDeal and I are assuming this decision was made by @Delta to end their contract with all political groups in order to remain neutral and the @nra was the first to be made public! Otherwise members may not trust our word moving forward!! #gapol https://t.co/q34MAsnkmh

Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian promptly released a memo, explaining:
“Some elected officials in Georgia tied our decision to a pending jet fuel tax exemption, threatening to eliminate it unless we reversed course,” Bastian wrote. “Our values are not for sale.”
I’m sure that statement was hard for Republicans to decipher as their votes have always been for sale. The NRA has donated millions to the GOP, and we have known this for ages. We have also been aware of the Republican concern-trolling that happens in the wake of such tragedies urging against “politicizing” mass shootings and such. We know that is an attempt to pacify an increasing cross-section of America that actually does want gun control measures. But time and time again, Republicans have shown that you get what you pay for. The NRA has paid handsomely for Republican allegiance and, until 3 weeks ago, it appeared that this norm would remain unchallenged.
Meanwhile, in Parkland, the surviving students of the February 14th mass shooting aren’t letting up and are encouraging Americans to vote out everyone in the NRA’s pocket.
