In a hearing on white nationalism held by the House Judiciary Committee, rising conservative star Candace Owens testified on behalf of the Republican Party in what they hoped would be a shining moment for them. That was not entirely the case because Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California was there to make sure that her past incendiary remarks referencing Hitler were heard and noted by all.
Lieu pointed out that while the minority party was able to select its own witnesses for the hearing and that out of ANYONE they could pick, they chose Ms. Owens. As he held up a cell phone, he said, “I don’t know Ms. Owens. I’m not going to characterize her. I’m going to let her own words do the talking.” He then played a 30 second video clip of Owens speaking at a conference in London last year.

“Whenever we say ‘nationalism,’ the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler… You know, he was a national socialist, but if Hitler had just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine.”-Candace Owens
Trump has praised Ms. Owens, the communications director of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA, for her impact within the party and in the country, and has since defended her remarks. Turning Point USA which has a close relationship with the Trump White House and is only gaining strength within the Republican Party.
“The problem is that he wanted — he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize. He wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German, everybody to look a different way. That’s not, to me, that’s not nationalism. So in thinking about how we could go bad down the line, I don’t really have an issue with nationalism. I really don’t. I think that it’s OK.”-Candace Owens
Although Owens has suggested that her remarks have been taken out of context and that this very hearing is simply a tactic by Democrats to instill fear into minorities, the fact remains that white nationalism and the violence that comes along with it ARE on the rise and have been since Donald Trump took office.
Owens told Business Insider that she believes white nationalism was now the “preferred scapegoat” of “a party that wants every minority group to think of themselves as victims, and to hate White Americans.” She did not deny the existence of racism but said “it’s completely over-hyped by the Left” and she went on to accuse Democrats of using a fear of racism to try to regain the White House.
“These efforts by the left are incredibly destructive to our national unity and it truly saddens me… I’ve never experienced one ounce of racism in all my time in conservative circles. I can’t say the same for my interactions with liberals.”-Candace Owens
