President Trump and his loyal supporters have still not given up on turning his border wall fantasy/obsession into a reality despite the very REAL fact that there has not been funding for it in recent budget plans. Senator Ted Cruz is one of those avid supporters and he said on Tuesday that he has the ideal plan: he wants to use the seized assets from drug cartel kingpin and newly convicted drug trafficker, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, to fund the wall.
Cruz used Twitter to encourage Congress to pass the cleverly named
Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order Act, or EL CHAPO, which would allow forfeited assets from Guzman and other drug lords to be reallocated to “border security assets”. Cruz tweeted, “It’s time to pass my EL CHAPO Act. I urge my Senate colleagues to take swift action on this crucial legislation.”
America’s justice system prevailed today in convicting Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo, on all 10 counts. U.S. prosecutors are seeking $14 billion in drug profits & other assets from El Chapo which should go towards funding our wall to #SecureTheBorder. https://t.co/hPwEUVM6SP— Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) February 12, 2019
Prosecutors are seeking $14 billion from Guzman, who now faces life in prison after he was found guilty of charges that included drug trafficking, conspiracy, and use of firearms.
“By leveraging any criminally forfeited assets of El Chapo and other murderous drug lords, we can offset the cost of securing our border and make meaningful progress toward delivering on the promises made to the American people,”Senator Ted Cruz
The US government just faced the longest shutdown in the nation’s history over Trump’s $5.7 billion dollar request for a border wall and in the most recent budget proposal there is $1.4 billion on the table for a border wall although a Trump declaration of a national emergency would bypass all of this and give him faster access to the billions of dollars he’d like to use.
