We all know her. We all love her. She represents the liveliest of dreams for so many Americans. She is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. And she is bad-ass.
Ginsburg was the honored guest at a Stanford University forum recently, where she spoke before a completely packed house. And while she avoided speaking about President Trump’s supreme-court nominees, she did have some strong language about a couple of other topics.
According to CBS News, Ginsburg aired her grievances with our ultra-partisan Congress. She commented that nothing positive comes from a group of men and women more devoted to voting along partisan lines than they are to doing the good work of and for the American people. The celebrated judge noted that she longed for a day when “it [Congress] was working for the good of the country and not just along party lines.”
But perhaps the most provocative idea Ginsburg suggested was related to the electoral college. Indeed, the system designed to protect the interests of the smaller states and rural areas, keeping power from being isolated in highly-populated urban centers, has led to the loser of the popular vote winning the presidency twice in recent history. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by around 3 million, yet still lost the vote in the electoral college.
Ginsburg did not elaborate, but did say she would like to change the arguably dysfunctional electoral college system. Her comment drew an extended applause from the 1,200 in attendance.
Just to add to my earlier statement that Ginsburg is bad-ass, this excerpt from CBS News’s report kind of sums up why we adore this feisty matriarch of the Supreme Court:
Ginsburg has shown no signs of slowing down and has said she has a personal trainer who leads her through hour-long workouts that include push-ups and weights. She said family plays a large part in her life, and she doesn’t admit defeat.
“The attitude is I’m going to surmount this whatever it is,” she said.
Since this report, Ginsburg has been diagnosed with lung cancer, but all signs seem to suggest she will pull through with flying colors –
Man, I love her.
