Since the FBI raid on Michael Cohen’s home, office, hotel room, and digital files — dozens of stories have trickled out about how paranoid Trump is that Cohen will throw him under the bus in order to save himself. He has achieved nearly mythical status the keeper of Trump’s most closely-guarded secrets, but is there someone Mueller can access who has even more dirt on Donald Trump?
That would be Roger Stone. Unlike Cohen, Stone does not have reason to protect Trump out of unconditional lawyer. In fact, when Roger Stone departed the Trump camp fairly early and there were hard feelings.
Stone is a beltway insider. In fact, he was a campaign aide to Richard Nixon. Are you starting to notice how often Richard Nixon comes up regarding Donald Trump and those in his periphery?
Law enforcement experts say that Stone’s acuity combined with his relatively low sense of loyalty of indebtedness to Trump have probably crossed special counsel Robert Mueller’s mind as he zeroes in on Stone — interviewing his friends, protégés, assistants and even his former drivers.
Roger Stone recently said he is “prepared” for a possible indictment in the Russia probe, though he expects it would be unrelated to his work surrounding the 2016 White House race.
The president’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, shrugged off questions about how Stone’s own liability could possibly cause problems for the president. “He can talk if he wants,” Giuliani said of Stone. “He’s not going to say anything. We’re not worried.” Once again, Giuliani makes a basic statement and comes off as a consigliere.
Per POLITICO, a friend of Stone’s, the dynamic between Donald Trump and and Roger Stone has always been strange:
“He’s gotten Trump in trouble. He’s gotten Trump out of trouble. He’s made Trump money. He’s lost Trump money. Trump would scream and yell and humiliate and hug him.”
At the moment, Stone seems a wild card. But so do so many who are ensnared in the Trump-Russia investigation. What are the chances that none of them prove to be wild in the sense that they flip on this president?
