Americans have rarely seen such a horrific electoral debacle as they did recently as Wisconsin’s Republicans forced voters to participate in the state election last week AMID a global pandemic.
Thousands of citizens literally risked their lives to make sure their vote was recorded.
Wisconsin’s republican legislature was asked to make amends to the state law that would allow each Wisconsin voter to receive absentee ballots they could fill out and return by mail.
Republicans flat-out refused.
They were asked to please consider the pandemic’s affect and the potential health concerns to the state’s citizen and at least reschedule the election.
Again Republicans refused. The continued to make it as challenging as possible on Wisconsin state residents to vote in an important election.
But why the refusal to compromise?
Well, clearly GOP officials believed this election needed to go forth at ANY cost to public health in order to make sure they saw a Republican victory in a state Supreme Court election.
There was a conservative justice, Daniel Kelly, listed on the ballot and his win was crucial in helping the party be victorious with future electoral schemes, including but not limited to, voter purges and district gerrymandering.
This is exactly why Donald Trump repeatedly tried to encourage support for the conservative incumbent on the ticket.
But Republicans underestimated Wisconsin voters.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported:
Dane County Circuit Judge Jill Karofsky won the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court, narrowing the conservative majority after a tumultuous election conducted in the midst of a global pandemic, according to unofficial results released Monday. Karofsky’s victory marked the first time in a dozen years that a Supreme Court challenger beat an incumbent — and just the second time in more than half a century. Her win over Justice Daniel Kelly will shift conservative control of the court from 5-2 to 4-3.
Karofsky was the progressive candidate and defeated conservative Kelly by double digits.
Republicans forced citizens to put themselves at risk. What they didn’t bet on was that many voters were willing to do just that to change the game and the leadership making unhealthy and dangerous choices for them all.
Shame on the Republicans who asked this of voters but kudos to voters who refuse to be silenced.
