President Donald Trump is already hard at work on his reelection campaign, as expected, but things aren’t going as smoothly as he would have hoped. Now he has reportedly cut connections with some of the campaign team’s pollsters after discovering they have leaked some pretty bleak polling data.
The data Trump doesn’t want the public seeing? Dismal info that shows former Vice President Joe Biden LEADING in several key states.
Last week the press ran stories with those very polling numbers taken back in March and Trump had a minor meltdown, insisting that they were “fake polls” and reminding everyone that he is winning “very big” in many key states.
Then by Sunday, both The New York Times and NBC News reported the President’s campaign team fallout with the pollsters, using a presidential adviser and someone close to the campaign as sources. The Times reported that the team cut ties with three of the five pollsters it currently uses with the hopes that the remaining pollsters would see the consequences of unauthorized disclosures of sensitive data and would therefore think twice before leaking information in the future.
The Times report said Trump had an extreme knee jerk reaction after the news broke that he was trailing Biden in the polls and that he instructed his aides to deny the existence of any internal polling like that. Instead, Trump apparently told them to say just the opposite- that they had data showing Trump leading and doing very well in the polls.
Trump made the following statement during an Oval Office meeting on Wednesday,
“We are winning in every single state that we’ve polled. We’re winning in Texas very big. We’re winning in Ohio very big. We’re winning in Florida very big.”President Trump, after internal polling data shows him trailing Biden in key states
Obviously, Trump had to take news like this to Twitter, immediately boasting about his “BIG” numbers:
…..The Fake (Corrupt) News Media said they had a leak into polling done by my campaign which, by the way and despite the phony and never ending Witch Hunt, are the best numbers WE have ever had. They reported Fake numbers that they made up & don’t even exist. WE WILL WIN AGAIN!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2019
Trump’s official spokesperson for the reelection campaign declined to comment but it’s clear that it’s going to be hard to come up with any supportive statements about Trump’s “best numbers” claim considering that now public polls are also releasing similar results. In fact, a Fox news poll just showed Trump not only behind Biden but also behind Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
