A video showing two women being viciously verbally attacked at a grocery store in Rifle, Colorado has now surfaced. The outrageous reason their harasser struck? THEY WERE SPEAKING SPANISH TO EACH OTHER. One fellow grocery shopper, later identified as Kamira Trent was not having ANY of it and stood up to the attacker in stark defense of the shoppers.
The video was posted to Facebook on Monday by Fabiola Velasquez, who was shopping with her friend Isabel Martin, went viral and has triggered outrage from the public, garnering over 1.5 million views as of this morning. The two women, who are from Mexico, were approached by the alleged instigator, Linda Dwire, and asked them if they lived in the country and enjoyed it. When they said yes, she flipped and demanded they speak English. Soon after, she was confronted by Ms. Trent with her telling Dwire, “I’m calling the cops. You leave these women alone! Get out!”
Dwire continued to spit vitriol, claiming nonsense such as “being from a different generation from her” as one legitimate reason she was doling out such a public shaming. Trent did not back down, defending the women and yelling to Dwire, “You do not harass Hispanic women!”
Eventually, store employees and the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office were alerted and according to BuzzFeed News in an interview with Ms. Velasquez, who was shopping with a friend when she began filming the video, Dwire was arrested and charged with harassment. Velasquez said on Facebook, “She said that if we’re living in this country we didn’t need to speak Spanish, only English.”
Ms. Trent, who as also interviewed, said she knew she had to intervene when she thought the exchange was getting too heated and showed no end in sight. Dwire told BuzzFeed that it had “nothing to do with race” but rather a “patriotic thing”.
Thank you, Ms. Trent.
