In an exclusive interview with ABC News, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen acknowledged that he may soon face criminal charges relating to an in an ongoing FBI probe of his finances and business dealings. But Cohen told ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos that he respects the prosecutors and the process. The president’s so-called “fixer” who once said he would do anything to protect Donald Trump, even “take a bullet”… is now saying his first loyalty rests with his family.
“My wife, my daughter, and my son have my first loyalty, and always will. I put family and country first.”
The interview offers evidence that Michael Cohen is likely to cooperate with the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, in an effort to reduce his own criminal exposure. Cohen announced during the interview that he is enlisting a new lawyer, former New York prosecutor Guy Petrillo, who once held a leadership post in the same office investigating Cohen. As George Stephanopoulos pointed out, that telegraphs a major shift for Cohen and any remaining ties to President Trump, as all of his prior lawyers have come from a sort of conclave in which they also represent Trump.
Following the ABC News interview, it was announced that Petrillo added a brand new lawyer to the roster: Lanny Davis. Davis, like Petrillo, is outside the Trump circle. As a matter of fact, he’s very much inside the Clinton circle, having previously served as counsel for Bill Clinton during his presidency.
Lanny Davis released a statement:
“Like most of America, I have been following the matter regarding Michael Cohen with great interest. As an attorney, I have talked to Michael many times in the last two weeks. Then I read his words published on July 2, and I recognized his sincerity.”
Davis also said that Michael Cohen deserves to tell his side of the story — “subject, of course, to the advice of counsel.”
All of this looks very good for Robert Mueller’s team and… not great for Trump. One thinks the president may have vastly overestimated the number of people willing to spend significant amounts of time in prison for him.
