Less than a week after the so-called “Nunes Memo” landed with a great clunk, the GOP lost even more credibility as Democratic lawmakers announced a “whistleblower” cited by Republicans as being able to reveal damning evidence implicating Hillary Clinton in the Uranium One scandal… had actually never even mentioned Clinton to the FBI.
The scandal was always a reach. Essentially, it involves 2010 sale of a uranium company to a Russian firm. Back in October 2017, it was announced that both the House Oversight Committee and House Intel Committee were each going to investigate. If you’ve forgotten who was at the helm of each of those committees — that would be Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy, respectively.
The implication was that Hillary Clinton must have up to some kind of monkey business since she was on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) at the time — because she was Secretary of State — 9 department heads plus the Secretary of Treasury sit on CFIUS.
Very soon after the accusation was floated, it was squashed by multiple experts who explained that Hillary Clinton attended few, if any, of the CFIUS meetings regarding the Uranium One sale. Also, as one would hope, there is no single person or handful of people who can actually sell of uranium reserves — not even Hillary Clinton — and there is vetting both before and after a CFIUS review. I mean… of course… it’s uranium! Most importantly, despite the sale, the uranium will remain in the United States.
President Donald Trump and a handful of his favorite sycophants have really tried to make Hillary Sold Uraium To The Russians a thing. In actuality, apart perhaps from regular and non-ironic viewers of Fox and Friends, the “scandal” never really soared. It didn’t even have wings.
Now Elijah Cummings (MD-7th) and Adam Schiff (CA-28th), the top Democrats on the House Oversight Committee and the House Intelligence Committee released a letter in which they addressed the allegations regarding the Uranium One deal one-by-one. The statements made by Republicans which could be proven false, were. The aspects which hinged on vague but often-repeated salacious information provided by unknown sources (which were repeatedly promised to be elucidated — particularly on or by Fox News) have been requested to parlay themselves into actual sources by providing testimony.
So I guess it’s back to the drawing board for Trump. Nunes, and the rest of the GOP. One can only imagine what the next nothingburger Republican scandal might entail. But as long as it keeps the 35-39% of Americans who approve of Trumps job performance from thinking about the fact that he colluded with a hostile foreign power to undermine our democratic process, I guess it’s worth doing.
Sorry. Allegedly colluded with a hostile foreign power to undermine our democratic process.
