The House Ways and Means Committee recently filed a federal lawsuit seeking the elusive tax returns that President Donald Trump has fought so long and hard to hide from the American people.
Breaking from WaPo: House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal is filing a lawsuit in federal court today seeking to compel the IRS to turn over Trump’s tax returns, according to a person familiar with the matter.https://t.co/djdpmhXaFK— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) July 2, 2019
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday against the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service, comes after Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin continues to reject any Congressional oversight and refuses to cooperate. Also fueling the fire for the lawsuit was the outlandish quote from White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney who said that Democrats will “never” see the President’s taxes.
Trump has been in an ongoing stalemate over his taxes since his days on the campaign trail and early in his presidency when he refused to release them, claiming that an IRS audit was the reason he couldn’t. The hitch with that excuse, however, is that tax experts agree that the “audit” is just NOT a valid reason. According to experts, individuals ARE allowed to release tax returns even if they’re under audit.
The House Committee filing the lawsuit says it does not have to explain WHY it is seeking the President’s returns, claiming that the Trump administration is directly violating a subpoena seeking the returns “in order to shield President Trump’s tax return information from Congressional scrutiny.”
The committee also notes it is investigating whether or not Mr. Rump is in violation of tax law compliance as well.
