Americans have watched President Trump slowly unravel over the course of his time in office, however, the extraordinary events of the last few months and his falling polls seem to be accelerating the pace of that downward spiral.
One GOP operative who asked to remain anonymous told Fox News, “It’s too early, but if the polls continue to worsen, you can see a scenario where he drops out.”
Another source said, “I’ve heard the talk but I doubt it’s true… My bet is, he drops if he believes there’s no way to win.”
Political Wire reported that according to Fox Business News commentator Charles Gasparino, some GOP operatives are raising the possibility that Donald Trump would actually consider dropping out of the 2020 Presidential Campaign due to his continually falling polls. One major player even described Trump’s current psyche as “fragile”, Gasparino tweeted in the breaking story earlier Sunday.
BREAKING— (thread)GOP operatives are for the first time raising the possibility that @realDonaldTrump could drop out of the race if his poll numbers don’t rebound. Over the weekend I spoke to a sample of major players; one described Trumps current psyche as “fragile.” I’m— Charles Gasparino (@CGasparino) June 28, 2020
not convinced yet; he’s got time and he’s running against an opponent who is literally hiding in his basement. Plus the public isn’t focusing yet on just how left wing @JoeBiden has become, so much so, he can bring himself to denounce rioting.— Charles Gasparino (@CGasparino) June 28, 2020
Gasparino said this certainly points to the tension within the GOP. He reminds that there is quite a bit of time until the election but that this is what he calls a “snapshot” look into to Camp Trump.
That said the speculation indicates how tense GOP operatives are about Trump losing and the party losing the senate and having their entire agenda abolished in a leftist wave election. Again lots of time and Trump has endured a horrible couple of months but that’s the snap shop— Charles Gasparino (@CGasparino) June 28, 2020
Gasparino finished out the day saying that he sees this as “a very low point for him [Trump], much lower than after Access Hollywood,” according to people who know him.
I’m not saying Trumo will drop FYI but I am reporting that this is a very low point for him, much lower than after access Hollywood I am told by people who know him. Also this is a snap shot and remember he’s running against a guy who is in hiding https://t.co/DGi3bJX7kf— Charles Gasparino (@CGasparino) June 28, 2020
Trump has seen a downward trend in his poll numbers in recent weeks and he continues to face heat about his mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic. And of course Trump’s response to the Black Lives Matter protests and riots in the weeks since George Floyd’s death have drawn sharp criticism from many.
Fox News has polling data that recently shows the president falling behind Democrat Joe Biden by 12 points. RealClearPolitics shows a polling average of Trump down by almost 10 points to Biden as well. Biden is also leading Trump in many battleground states. This news has obviously sent Trump into a tailspin.
The campaign released a statement that said:
“As was the case in 2016, the mainstream news media is relying on polling financed by their own operations and others, released publicly in order to set a narrative that conforms with their own worldviews… The president’s campaign has repeatedly called into question the validity of such polling, based on methodology, party representation in the sample, wording of questions, and other factors. These are legitimate criticisms, as there are real differences between public polling and proprietary internal polling such as the campaign conducts for itself.’
Catch that last statement? “Internal polling such as the campaign conducts for itself.” That sounds credible, right?
Adding fuel to the fire, Tucker Carlson tweeted, “President Trump may lose this election.” Carlson’s tweet also included a link to a recent show where he started off by saying, “not many people are saying it out loud on the right, but the fact is that President Trump could well lose this election. In fact, unless fundamental facts change soon, it could be tough for him to be re-elected.”
