The now iconic MAGA hat has become of staple of President Trump’s presidency and his supporters but is also an inflammatory subject at the center of controversial political conversations, social gatherings, and it seems, a divided country in general. The red Make America Great Again has come to represent Trump policies, especially those on immigration, and some see it as a statement against minorities and women.
The hat has been seen in countless viral videos as the source of many heated arguments throughout the nation and on Monday, the Fox News show “The Five” found themselves embroiled in a heated discussion about it, as well.
The conversation heated up when the panel began discussing Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe’s flippant comments about not being able to support the Patriots in the Super Bowl after seeing Tom Brady sporting a MAGA hat, with Radcliffe saying, “take that MAGA hat out of your locker.”. Radcliffe had more to say on the topic:
“I feel like that was the moment when we were like, as a country, ‘Oh, c’mon, dude, we all want to be behind you, you’re awesome, don’t put that in there.’”Daniel Radcliffe, on Tom Brady’s MAGA hat
The panel were debating the issue when commentator Juan Williams interjected, “I don’t understand that you guys don’t see that this hat is loaded with meaning for people, in terms of being associated with Donald Trump’s agenda,”, specifically referencing Trump’s infamous “grabbing women” conversation.
When pressed on the issue, Williams agreed that people should be “open minded” to those who wear the hat, but followed by saying people need to be aware what that hat has come to symbolize for so many in this country. He added that Trump’s vitriolic rhetoric has only added fuel to the fire, and described the message the hat represents.
“The racism and the misogyny… I think a lot of people think ‘what are you doing with this hat.'”Fox News panelist Juan Williams, on people who wear the MAGA hat
