Donald Trump dismissed as “fake news” a Washington Post article that indicated he was worried that Donald Trump Jr “inadvertently may have wandered into legal jeopardy”. He also tweeted on Sunday that seeking opposition research was “totally legal” and “done all the time in politics.”
But Trump’s actions — and those of his legal team — are not consistent with a man who’s unconcerned. After all, if there was never anything wrong with what happened during that June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower, why have there been so many lies? Why had the story evolved so many times?
We already know that Donald Trump helped dictate what he knew to be a totally false statement about the reason for the meeting, after his son inexplicably released an email chain on Twitter. Additionally, per New York Times, Trump’s lawyers told special counsel Robert S. Mueller III via memo that the Trump statement about the meeting was “short, but accurate.”
Now Donald Trump’s recent tweet has proven that to be a lie as well. And, no, opposition research involving hostile foreign powers is not something that happens all the time. It’s not supposed to happen. Period. Ever.
Robert Mueller certainly knows that.
