After Fox News aired a segment about the New York district of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, featuring a guest who said it was “dirty” because of the “illegal aliens” who reside there, the outspoken congresswoman fired back, slamming the network and popular prime-time host Tucker Carlson.
Ocasio-Cortez called Carlson a “white supremacist sympathizer” and said his show was an “hourlong production of unmitigated racism.”
The guest for the controversial segment was Seth Barron, who is a project director at the conservative Manhattan Institute.
Footage was aired showing litter in New York’s 14th District and Barron said that the Bronx-Queens district, represented by Ocasio-Cortez, was “occupied by relatively few American citizens,” claiming that residents dump trash everywhere and “live in a lot of illegal spaces, like basements.”
Barron said that “part of the reason is because her district is actually one of the least American districts in the country, and by that, I don’t mean that it’s not part of America, but it’s occupied by relatively few American citizens,” claiming that “a very high percentage of her district’s” inhabitants are undocumented residents.
Barron has since come under fire for his statements, with many people condemning them as racist.
But these statements line up with much of what Carlson spouts out on a regular basis on his show, usually focusing on how US immigrants are destroying the country.
Ocasio-Cortez has said in the past that she has refused to appear on the Fox News network because of the “unmitigated racism” she believes is on display “without any accountability.”
She said, “‘Immigrants are dirty’ is a lazy, tired, racist trope.”
The congresswoman said in a tweet, “I go back and forth on whether to go on Fox News…
The main reason I haven’t is squaring the fact that the ad revenue from it bankrolls a white supremacist sympathizer to broadcast an hour-long production of unmitigated racism, without any accountability whatsoever.”
