After Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts made the tough decision to officially drop out of the 2020 presidential race last month, President Trump wasted NO time lashing out the combat veteran for gracefully exiting the race.
Moulton had experienced months of low numbers in the polls and said things were not going “the way we had hoped” but made sure to say he would be “campaigning [his] ass off for whoever wins our nomination in 2020.”
Coincidentally, the same day that Moulton announced his decision to pull out of the race, stocks fell with the Dow closing under 600 points that day. Of course, this comes on the heels of Trump’s recent fueling of the trade war with China but the President took this opportunity to combine and connect the Dow downward trend and Moulton’s exit in one bizarre tweet.
The president tweeted, “The Dow is down 573 points perhaps on the news that Representative Seth Moulton, whoever that may be, has dropped out of the 2020 Presidential Race.”

The congressman said to CNN that he was “glad [Trump] thinks that I have more influence over Wall Street than he does… He’s probably thrilled that I’m out.”
The wide field of Democratic candidates met Moulton’s decision to stop his campaign with respect, highlighting his military career as a Marine with end the campaign was met with grace from other Democratic candidates. Many of them highlighted his military service in the US Marine Corps and numerous honors he was given for Iraq deployments, including the Bronze Star and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal for “fearlessly [exposing] himself to enemy fire” after some of his fellow Marines were wounded.
Beto O’Rourke spoke eloquently of Moulton on Twitter, saying, “[Seth Moulton] is a real American hero; and I know his service to our country has only begun… Thank you, Congressman, for showing the courage to open up about post-traumatic stress on this campaign — and for all of your leadership.”
Another Dem candidate, South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg, who was in the US Navy Reserves, spoke highly of Moulton’s service: “[Seth Moulton] is a patriot who defended our nation and our values as a Marine and as a Congressman. He understands the urgency of this moment, and I’m grateful for his voice and for his service.”
Along with praising Moulton’s service record, some Democratic candidates took the opportunity to contrast his past with Trump’s LACK of military service:

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California, who was an Air Force Reserves colonel, called out Trump’s notable absence from the Vietnam War- referring to Trump’s FIVE deferments.
Lieu had probably the strongest statements for Trump yet and held NOTHING back when he tweeted:
“[Seth Moulton] served in combat & received a bronze star,” “You received fake deferments because of your daddy. In other words, Rep Moulton remains a hero. And you remain a frickin coward.”Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California
Hey @realDonaldTrump, the Dow actually dropped over 623 points today.— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) August 23, 2019
Also, @sethmoulton served in combat & received a bronze star. You received fake deferments because of your daddy.
In other words, Rep Moulton remains a hero. And you remain a frickin coward.#FridayThoughts https://t.co/C2YUdm3F2h
